What is a Hackathon?
Hack + Marathon = Hackathon
Hackathons are interdisciplinary events where students from diverse fields come together to create innovative solutions (“hacks”) to real-world challenges within a weekend.
Students form their own teams to develop viable solutions with guidance from mentors.
The Hackathon ends with a final competition where teams present their projects to a panel of judges, and winners are awarded one of three $1,500 prizes!
Team Formation
You do not need a team before signing up! You can build your team and idea during our Team Building Reception on Thursday, September 24 and at the Kick-off event on Friday, September 25.
Teams must consist of at least two different disciplines and no more than 4-6 members.
Team Building Reception
When: Thursday, September 24 @ 5-6pm
Where: AVC Learning Commons Atrium
This reception will provide an opportunity for you to meet and begin forming their teams! Refreshments will be provided and organizers will be there to facilitate team-building.
Event Kick-Off
When: Friday, September 25 @ 4pm
Where: AVC Lecture Theatre A
Following the opening words, students will finalize their teams. If you were unable to make it to the Team Building Reception, no worries! This will be your time to find your team.
Once you have been accepted as a Hackathon participant, you will also be added to a Moodle page. Please use the Discussion Board to start finding your team!

Over the weekend, students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds will develop a broad range of ideas to address challenges in animal welfare. The challenge areas below are examples of topics that students may encounter.
